Sung Hwan Kim’s video Love Before Bond, presented in the central pavilion of the Giardini, can be described as one of the highlights of the just ended 57th Venice Biennale.
About
In his first solo exhibition in Berlin, Kim will present the same work as part of a new installation specially developed for the daadgalerie. Drawings and sketches created during the formative stages of the project accompany a video installation produced together with musician David Michael DiGregorio alias dogr.Fear, and strategies to counteract it, domestic violence and racism are the central themes of Love Before Bond, which is portrayed in scenic sequences by adolescent protagonists. The oppressive atmosphere of the various stage-like interiors is accompanied by a narrative that takes up quotes from African-American and European literature, at times in Arabic, including the exhibition’s title, borrowed from James Baldwin’s 1961 essay “Alas, Poor Richard.”
