About
Our third screening observes the very nature of dance, sees dance merging with nature, creating a parallel sphere, where bodies speak and language is silenced. We are very proud to be able to show a mix of established and emerging artist films from across Europe.
Dissonant
Manon de Boer
Belgium 2010
In Dissonant, Manon de Boer films dancer Cynthia Loemij while the latter dances for about 10 minutes to Eugène Ysaÿe’s 3 sonates for violin solo – a piece that holds vivid memories for her. The camera follows her every movement. A physical time limit, namely the 3-minute duration of one 16-mm film roll, interrupts the camera’s continued movement. While the dance continues, and the sound of it is audible, the screen is black during the one minute that is needed to change the film roll.
Sing The Sand into Pearls
Raquel Claudino
Portugal, UK 2013
Embraced in a dance of rebellion, Sing The Sand Into Pearls tells the story of three women who escape from a self-centered society and celebrate genuinity in a hideaway ritual. Raquel Claudino debuts in a contemporary dance film, exploring the raw beauty of the performers across a city charged with history and mysticism. Set in Lisbon, a metropolis with flaws, they narrate their journey through a delicate dance that brings us all to a parallel sphere.
Something to do with my Father
Jana Koelmel
UK, Germany, Puerto Rico 2014
Jana Koelmel worked in collaboration with contemporary dancer, and choreographer Lauren Bridle. A whirling dancing girl turns alone in a dusty pool; wind pulls and feeds a tower of flame; bodies of water surround and rock a small raft upon which two people stand; the forest throbs. The hypnotic sound is a combination of spoken narrative and an internal hum of memory. One senses a wealth of metaphors, an internal dreamscape and a tender analysis of another time.
Breaking
Pipo Tafel
Germany 2012
This dynamic dance film shows a wordless encounter of two people on the beach. This choreography adapted for film creates a dance piece, where camera and protagonists dance with each other – a homage to the power of the sea. Like two crabs the two dancers shift between becoming wedged, and circling around each other. The energy oscillates within seconds from melding to repel, closeness to distance. Waves break in the background and we are confronted with the never-ending vastness of the ocean.
