The result of a unique collaboration between artist Stefan Gant and the Welsh Tug of War Association, this exhibition tests the boundaries of contemporary drawing practice.

About

Between March 2013 and March 2014 a unique collaboration took place between the artist Stefan Gant and the Welsh Tug of War Association, supported by the Arts Council of Wales. The project focus was to research, explore and generate a body of artworks that explored and tested the boundaries of contemporary drawing practice through a range of approaches.

The resulting exhibition, Tug of War Drawing Project, will be on show at the University of Northampton’s Avenue Gallery this February following an exhibition tour through Wales last year which Nia Roberts,  freelance Special Projects Curator for Oriel Plas Glyn y Weddw Gallery and former Projects Manager at Oriel Mostyn Gallery, North Wales described as “One of the best shows I saw in 2014”.

Work on display documents a tug of war contest between Wales and England, with footage of a ‘weighing in’ ceremony and a 30ft graphite and resin cast taken from the ground following a national tug of war competition.

Stefan has been a finalist on several occasions for the Jerwood Drawing Prize and described as a practitioner who "pushes the boundaries of what drawing constitutes" (Tomorrows Art Today Magazine, James Cahill (2012)).  He is currently a Lecturer in Drawing and New Media at the University of Northampton where he teaches across Fine Art undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Tug of War Drawing Project will open at Avenue Gallery from 6-27 February, with a private view of the exhibition on Thursday 12th February from 5-8pm.  Admission is free.  Avenue Gallery is located in The University of Northampton’s Avenue Campus on St. George’s Avenue, Northampton NN2 6JD.  For more information please contact the Gallery on 01604 893050 or email gallery@northampton.ac.uk.
