AboutDuring his residency at Standpoint, Tom has been developing new work exploring speech perception and âmultisensory-integration'; the way information from the different senses is integrated by the nervous system.
The final work will be a video and sound installation, shown at Tramway in Glasgow during March 2014.
For this event, Tom will present a special preview of the work in progress, which revisits techniques associated with Lettrism and concrete poetry in the light of subsequent developments in linguistics and cognitive psychology.
Tom will also show recent video work 'Violence. Silence.', 2013.
Tom Varley (based in Glasgow) is currently on residency at Standpoint Gallery, as part of Standpoint Futures Residencies 2014.
Taking place at Standpoint Gallery, London, Standpoint Futures Residencies are for emerging/mid career artists, designed to be flexible and responsive to the project, needs and desired outcomes of individual participants. The residency's chief aims are to provide high quality, individualized opportunities to develop the artist's practice and career, and to integrate London and the regional UK art world to promote access and the exchange of ideas.
Standpoint Futures is supported by Arts Council England, Arts Council Wales, Creative Scotland and the Fenton Arts Trust. In addition Tom Varley's residency is supported by Art Trust Scotland and The Hope Scott Trust.
We would also like to acknowledge our regional partners with whom we run the programme and select artists: G39, Chapter, Peacock Visual Arts, Exeter Phoenix and The Royal Standard.
