Srijon Chowdhury’s new oil paintings occupy the threshold between fairytale and realism, using intense color and value contrasts as immersive tools.
About
This series of intimate-scale oil paintings, created for Chowdhury's second solo exhibition at Upfor, is rich in references to literature, art history and the artist’s personal history. Having spent several months in 2017 creating Revelation Theater, a series of large-scale paintings about the apocalypse, works in The Coldest Night are evidence of "the residue of immersing myself in that story and now trying to get back out of it," Chowdhury says. Consciously situated in the anxiety of the contemporary moment, Chowdhury hopes to help us “find beauty in darkness and see the darkness that frames all beauty."
