About

BLACKHEATH GALLERY | 34a Tranquil Vale, Blackheath, London SE3 0AX -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPRING EXHIBITION 2009 JAMES BURKE | Oscar Villalon | Pablo Schugurensky | James Song | Joanna Sims About - JAMES BURKE The show features 16 exciting new works produced during the last 24 months by the British artist, James Burke - Includes 12 previously unexhibited works. Ideologies, systems, authoritarian hierarchies, power-drives & authorship | The Foundations New-religions, self-proclaimed prophets, artificiality & design | The Components Digital production & reproduction technologies | The Tools Saturation & reduction | The Colours Burke investigates the philosophical concerns of Carl Gustav Jung's Shadow and Foucault's Power-drive theories. What seems interesting, are not democratically elected leaders, but those individuals who locate that authority on their own ground — founded upon religion". The artist breaks down, edits and manipulates sourced images, through what the artist outwardly refers to as, "an age-old generic system of fabrication — through superficial, flawed, puffed-up systems of ideology". All the great movements — politics and democracy, religion, nation and society are all guilty of such undertakings. Intense chromophobic (colour related) tendencies only add to the tension already built between the split surfaces of material and subject matter.
