About
Sprains, Strains and Fractures is a series of exhibitions by a group of three Finnish artists; Leena Illukka, Silja Puranen and Virpi Vesanen-Laukkanen. The group's exhibitions contemplate on structures of the society – sprains and fractures in our conception of the past and future as well as twists of the truth. As the capitalist system strives to increase profits, complicity and segregation in the society are growing and global consumption exceeds the capacity of our planet. In their works Illukka, Puranen and Vesanen-Laukkanen comment on our short memory of history, the rights and responsibilities of subsequent generations, and the human need to face another. Pessimistic visions meet consolation, warmth and a possibility foranother chance. The signs of devastation are in the air, but even if broken the world is still beautiful.
Each of the group's exhibitions builds up to a new entity tailored according to the space and situation. The exhibition in Galerie Pleiku consists of soft sculptures, reclaimed textiles, video and media art.
The exhibition is supported by the Arts Promotion Center Finland.
