A site-specific art installation exploring ritual and remembrance, death and loss by Bea Denton at the Grade-I listed Summer House, Charlton House & Gardens.
About
A site-specific art installation by Bea Denton at The Summer House, Charlton House & Gardens.
Artist Bea Denton explores ritual and remembrance, death and loss in this first-of-a-kind art exhibition in the Summer House at Charlton House, Royal Borough of Greenwich. In her evolving body of work, Songs of Lamentation, the portraits of hundreds of souls have been captured by Bea from tombstones in graveyards across Europe then transformed through layers of photography, projection and print into ethereal haunting imagery.
For this exhibition a number of portraits will be printed onto large-scale translucent hanging artworks, designed to be viewed through the windows on all four sides of the Grade-I listed building that sits in the northwest corner of the Charlton House estate. The Summer House, attributed to Inigo Jones and dating from around 1630, has had many uses in its time, including as an air-raid shelter and as public lavatories up until the 1990s.
The exhibition will run from March 14th to April 14th and viewable for free at any time. It is supported by an Arts Council Grant.
