Painting by Francesca Mollett
About
Francesca Mollett’s observational drawings are driven by an inquisitive approach towards mark making and composition, where discoveries are worked through in a series of drawings and paintings. While appearing quite abstract they often give the feeling of landscapes, foliage and natural forms. Using contrast as an approach to painting, she interweave textures, rhythms of transparency and opacity, luminous and pastel colour, sharp and blended marks.
In Shoots, Francesca wanted to create an exchange between sequences of patterns of marks, which could shift across the surface of the drawings. The process of working from the subject - supple vegetation staggered in the space of a garden - extracted particular notations of shape and colour to be explored. In both gardens and painting, the editing of excess of form, the perceptual play between surface and depth, and the encouragement or discouragement of certain interactions, leads to a spatial environment articulating a temporal one.
Francesca studied at Wimbledon College of Art and The Royal Drawing School and is based in South London.
