About
SHIM Invitational 1 is an inaugural exhibition of ten artists, selected from SHIM’s first group of applicants, on view at ArtHelix Gallery in Brooklyn, New York from December 11-20, 2015. The exhibition features the works of Barry Carlsen, Katherine Evans, Shani Ha, Roberto Jamora, norton, Janet Passehl, Marcy Rosenblat, Malu Tan, Joan Zalenski, and Alex Zenger.
Our company is inspired by the rise of the shared digital economy. Small, and nimble startups like AirBNB, Zip Car, and Uber have discovered a booming marketplace inside already existing industries. Rather than building more infrastructures, these companies found new opportunities for what already exists. By re-adapting underutilized, pre-existing infrastructures, an economy of scarcity could be transformed with little cost.
SHIM uses similar strategies to disrupt the art world gallery model. Here, we find ways in which more users can access gallery space without having to rent it outright or create a gallery of their own. This frees an enormous amount of capital (both creative and actual) that is currently being wasted on an over-emphasis on autonomous ownership.
