About
Shapes and things features experimentation with fundamental aspects of form and the notions of object-hood. Moving from the definition of shape- as something external, a contour or an outline of someone or something- to the active pursuit of the creation of form, the five artists each broach their subjects with a similarly intense focus.
In the exhibition there is equally a conside...ration of the common place, the mundane, and a tendency to toy with infinitesimal shifts in dimension. From a thorough exploration of the deliberate flatness of a painted surface, to the interplay between figurative painted works and sculptures, many concepts of form are methodically investigated. Despite an almost habitual consideration of the object and shape there is a purposeful step away from the traditional approach. Self-made pigment is rendered in such a way as to imply instantaneity, and steel, which is both a substantial support and something that merges with the wall behind it, erases the idea of painting as object. Contrastingly, wooden reliefs are a direct conflict with ideas of flatness, and what are recognised as usually harmless implements begin to dominate with their mutated proportions. shapes and things includes painting, drawing and sculpture from five very distinct positions.
