Serene, the world of Yuzen - a Japanese silk painting exhibition -

About

Yuzen is the Japanese traditional craft of silk dye-resist painting. It was originally used to decorate kimono and obi (sash) and has been practised for centuries. Typically, artists draw mainly on natural and seasonal iconography for inspiration, using the elements too, in combinations that often comprise water and skies, flowers and leaves.

In this exhibition, Svetlana unifies insistent themes of nature and peace. At times, it is direct and explicit, such as Koi resting languidly in a pond, beneath an autumnal tree. In others, perhaps less so, such as the cooling air of a waving sensu (foldable hand fan) or a lone lolling maple branch before a celestial sky. Yet in all there is a clear sense of time and calm. And throughout this series, these qualities are recalled, introducing us to the beauty of Yuzen painting, the beauty of nature expressed on silk.

Svetlana was born in Russia and grew up in Khavarosk, a city with strong commercial and cultural ties to Japan. She moved to Tokyo in her 30’s and spent five years studying and learning Yuzen painting. In 2008, she exhibited her work as part of a student collective alongside her master, Mrs Tada. She received high praise, especially as a non-Japanese artist practising a very traditional art form. Then in 2010, she moved to Wales with her family and continued to paint. She has had two shows there, winning positive reviews for her work. This exhibition is her first solo show outside of Wales.

Private view: Thursday 11th January, 18:00-20:00  (Event is free, but booking is preferable via eventbrite)
