Self Storage NYC is a site-specific exhibition-event taking place in select self storage facilities in Long Island City and Flux Factory’s gallery.

About

The project is a major Flux Factory show occurring throughout October, organized by a team of international curators.

Self Storage legally occupies self storage units to highlight displacement. Taking full advantage of the “1 month 1 dollar” offers provided by self storage facilities around Flux Factory, Self Storage NYC provides 10 currently displaced artist or activist-run spaces and projects with the opportunity to freely curate a storage unit for a month. At the same time, Flux Factory’s gallery will function as co-working space for these artists and activists.

A program of talks and activities (TBA) will take place for both the participants and the public, addressing topics related to the social responsibility of city development, the sustainability of non-traditional spaces and the phenomenon of storage.

Visitors will experience Self Storage NYC independently through a downloadable map with instructions to locate and access each storage unit. Visitors can also access an audio description of each presentation when they are in a unit.

Quotes:
“Space is at a premium in New York City – so much so that in a city with no room for new graveyards, the battle for space even follows us into the afterlife. The space we need for our belongings is, of course, just another extension of the endless gridding of the city into saleable space and rooms.” Erica Lyle from the Self Storage project You Can’t Take it With You.

“The essentially unregulated New York City real estate market is driving prices up, driving artists out of the city – by hacking the one dollar offer we play along on marked terms.” –Erik Duckert, Self Storage Curator

Self Storage NYC is curated by Julie Bitsch (DK), Will Owen (US), Erik Duckert (DK), Sean Naftel (US) and Melinda Lauw (SG).

Participating spaces and projects include: Death by Audio Arcade, MET Media Lab/Marco Castro Cosio, Weaving Tiny Lights/Tyler Kline, Blissville, Proteus Gowanus, You Can’t Take It With You/Erica Lyle, Bizaarbazaar/Selwa Abd, Bliss on Bliss Art Project, Islands in the Net/Kristoffer Ørum.
