SANCTUARY: Green Spaces & Social Value

About

More than two-thirds of the population in England live in urban areas and there is increasing recognition of the value of green space to modern urban lives; from mental health and biodiversity to the daily pleasure of millions.

Whilst artist-not-in-residence at the Garden Museum (the Museum has been closed during the year of her residency for major renovations) Eileen Hogan created a ‘virtual Garden Museum’ by asking a cross-section of people to nominate a London green space that is important to them and to describe why. 

The selections are varied and range across private, public, community, guerilla, corporate, remembered and painted. People value spaces which have intensity, history, resilience and provide sanctuary.

This event will deal with some related, but distinct issues, which have emerged from the project about the importance of the green infrastructures in cities to well-being.

The symposium will be introduced by Christopher Woodward, Director of the Garden Museum, and will end with a panel discussion chaired by Nigel Carrington, Vice-Chancellor of University of the Arts, London, and will be followed by a private view of the exhibition.
