Solo Exhibition

About

A menagerie of wild animals will migrate to Burghley Sculpture Garden this year for Sally Matthews's solo exhibition. Various beasts will stalk Capability Brown's garden including deer, zebra, wolves, sheep and dogs; all waiting to be discovered in the undergrowth and hidden spaces. Matthews's dynamic sculptures deal with not just what each animal looks like, but its nature, how it moves, how it lives and what it is. Each is anatomically honed, but rendered to heighten the viewer's awareness of particular character traits. Intriguingly, Matthews captures the sense of an individual, even in groups of the same species; such as the bedraggled boar that will hunt the wooded areas or the cows dipping to drink from the lake. The sculptor will also premiere a horse welded from old chains, as well as making sculptures in response to the grounds during the installation period.
