S1... at a glance

…At a Glance invites studio groups selected by Mexico for a one off exhibition/event. Groups we have met and worked with before and ones we have seen and wanted to work with. The product of these encounters will be made public for a series of one night and one day exhibitions. 'It is a question we have discussed before; 'How many people dream about you each night?' Speaking from personal experience, many characters will come and go while we sleep, one body often shifting into various people and faces, not all of them known or remembered. There are people you are familiar with straight away; friends, family, colleagues and so on, but it is the other faces that are perhaps more intriguing. It is easy to think of them as recreations of faces you have seen at a glance, features taken from people you don't know but have remembered enough to see again.' The first being S1...At a Glance S1 is an artist-led organisation providing studio space for over twenty Sheffield based artists and a project space, which presents an annual programme of contemporary exhibitions, screenings and events. Founded in 1995 by a group of Sheffield based artists seeking to create a sustainable studio environment in Sheffield City Centre. The organisation evolved under the direction of its artist member base and it continues to adapt in response to shifts in current practice. The project space was initiated through a series of exhibitions organised by the artists at S1 studios who were aiming to provide a platform for new work and ideas. The S1/studios are open plan to support a flexible and discursive working environment. The studios are managed by a committee of artist members who work with the Curator and Board of Trustees to determine the direction and future of the organisation.
