If Memory Serves is a research project by Ryan Kearney, looking to narrate The Nightingale Club’s previous venue on Thorp Street, which in 1994 was acquired for the Hippodrome’s expansion.
About
Through a combination of first-hand accounts and archival material, the display considers the role of memory in forming a queerer archive, while encouraging discussions around the regeneration of Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ spaces.
Ryan Kearney (b. 1995) is an independent curator, writer and researcher. He is programme assistant of public programmes and research at Nottingham Contemporary. Ryan’s on-going research centres on queer participatory and socially engaged curatorial practices.
He completed his undergraduate degree in Photography at London College of Communication in 2016 and his MA in Art History and Curating at the University of Birmingham in 2018.
Ryan's writing has appeared in this is tomorrow and In the Pink, a publication launched by Grand Union and SHOUT Festival in November 2018. Recent projects include The Club’s Conception (or How the Egg Was Cracked), Recent Activity (2019); Three Models for Change, STRYX (2018); Rainbow Flag / Trojan Horse: Ian Giles, Recent Activity (2018); and Queering the Archive, Recent Activity (2017). He assists in delivering the public programme of Recent Activity, an non-profit space based in Birmingham.
