‘Ruins of Time / Winter, English Garden’ is part three of the LME (London-Munich Exchange) ‘Ruins of Time’- series of projects exploring the passage of time and its specific expression in the architecture of a site, place or landscape.

About

‘Ruins of Time / Winter, English Garden’: 22 February – 5 March 2018, in the Orangerie, Englischer Garten 1a, 80538 Munich, Germany

'Ruins of Time' is an on-going project by artists from Britain and Germany, with exhibitions over several years in both London and Munich. Initiated by London-Munich Exchange [LME], directed by Eleonora Bourmistrov and Milena Michalski, 'Ruins of Time' presents its new exhibition in the Orangerie, English Garden, Munich. The first exhibition ’Ruins of Time / The Crypt’ was held at the Crypt Gallery, St. Pancras, London in November 2015; the second ‘Ruins of Time / Asylum’ in the Asylum Chapel, London, in March 2017. Both exhibitions were funded by the City of Munich Department of Arts and Culture.

LME is an association concerned with promoting the cultural relationships between artists from Great Britain and Germany through projects and exhibitions in both countries. The LME-artists work in a variety of media, ranging from sculpture, painting and installation to photography, time-based media and performance.

‘Ruins of Time / Winter, English Garden’ is the third in the LME ‘Ruins of Time‘- series of projects exploring the passage of time and its specific expression in the architecture of a site, place or landscape.

The title ‘Winter, English Garden’ has been deliberately chosen, as it allows the winter themes ‘decay’, ‘end time’ and ‘death’ to be combined with the dreamlike stillness and purity of a snowy landscape. The English Garden, as a site in the broader sense, and the winter time of the event bring together these concepts and themes, revolving around time passing and ruins in conjunction with - or opposed to - the ideas of immaterial beauty, dream time, emptiness and timelessness. Whilst it bursts with life and blooms with thousands of flowers in summer, the garden now stands still, frozen in a moment, as if defying death.

The participants are 12 artists from London, Munich and New York, whose works deal with the themes outlined above. Engaged in a collaborative process, the LME artists will respond to Winter and the English Garden in Munich through their works and performances, taking into consideration the specific aspects of this landscape-site, in historical, cultural and contemporary terms. It is fitting that the name of the Munich site is the English Garden, which underlines the connectedness of the LME participants all the more.

The exhibition ‘Ruins of Time / Winter, English Garden' will offer the public multifocal and multicultural views of many key concepts of the 'Ruins of Time' project, from both British and German perspectives, with the further aim of continuing this dialogue in subsequent LME group exhibitions in Germany and Great Britain.
