About
A-side B-side Gallery is pleased to present, ‘Rokko Island’ an exhibition by Andy Donohoe
The launch exhibition of a book I shot during my recent trip to Japan.
“It’s worthwhile to take a brief look back in order to understand the moment from which these pictures emerge. Indeed, the history of Rokko Island is less obvious than one might expect, and richer too. So where to begin? The Post-War years in Japan are haunted by a sense of longing, the wish to fulfil a utopian dream. By the early 1960s, Japan and the world were facing the challenges of massive growth and unprecedented change. The world was locked in a precarious nuclear balancing act, and throughout the coming decade, social revolt by students and the disenfranchised would rock the West and Japan. Rising economic prosperity marked those years with extraordinary urban expansion that in turn, preceded a profound urban and environmental crisis. These diverse threats were also opportunities accelerating the changes that would stir some to imagine spectacular new utopian plans.
Rokko Island was one of those plans.”
