Surface Gallery is pleased to announce the return of our annual studio artist show: Ritual.

This August, Surface Gallery studio artists reconvene with Ritual and a truly wide variety of art practices. Ritual features a 3-D tableau by Henegan Barr that considers lockdown limbo, while both Newton and Wileman attempt to escape the ritual control of conventional painting and drawing, and focus instead on playful abstract compositions that explore the tension between methodical and spontaneous gestures on canvas. Where Lumley evidences habitual human mark marking behaviours through a patination of layers in mixed media surfaces, Cutmore’s contemporary landscapes reflect on the processes involved in their making. Two new studio artists join for this year’s ritual: Marshall promises us something playful in costume, while The Dunce tells us that he makes “art stuff, such as limited edition letterpress prints and risograph prints, original collages, paintings and more”. Surface old timer, Henegan, on the other hand, tells us he sleeps and rests in prints. Ritual will also include Melvyn James whose sad passing in June will be commemorated in a selection of his unique paintings and drawings.

Covid-safe Monoprint Workshops with Paul Henegan

Paul welcomes new and previous participants to take part in two Covid-safe practical monoprint workshops. Work in small “family” bubbles at your own workstation.
