About
Richard Bell is a British abstract artist. Influenced by the modernist histories, artists, and landscape in Cornwall he has returned to the area on many occasions. Paintings presented in this exhibition were envisaged and developed during Covid lockdown when he stayed with family in Lostwithiel.
His practice has long been focussed on the elasticity of form and colour in abstract painting. His layering of colour planes on a shallow painted surface is developed further by the painting of physical levels and depth which he has called ‘relief-painting’.
He studied painting at Falmouth School of Art, Portsmouth Polytechnic, and Illinois University, USA (1973-1977). His work is in the Arts Council Collection and was included in I Chose This which showed at both The Exchange and at Newlyn Art Gallery in 2023.
His work can be seen in key public and private collections, including: The South Bank Collection (Arts Council); The Sainsbury Centre (UEA), The Mondrianhuis Collection, Armersfoort, Kunst Sammlung Stadtische Museen, Jena, Germany, and John Simons’ Collection. He won an Arts Council grant in 1979 to construct a series of wood reliefs.
Richard Bell lives and works in London.
