reFrag: is a symposium exploring new connections between art, culture and technology and aims to introduce the Glitch Art scene to a wider, more mainstream audience.

About

This first symposium is a collaboration between Parsons Paris and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). The project was initiated by Benjamin Gaulon, Program Director of the MFA Design+Technology and BFA Art, Media and Technology at Parsons Paris. Held across four days, participants can join in online and/or in Paris via the three main open tracks: A: DISNOVATION, B: IDENTITIES, C: HYSTORIES.

Scheduled in 5 minute increments i.e. a 20 minute skill share or a 15 minute talk, these tracks open up the possibility for improvisation and self-organized forms of participation. Each day is co-curated with different track leaders, including  Nicolas MaigretMarie LechnerAlison CareyIvan Twohig andShawné Michaelain Holloway from Paris, and Jon CatesNick Britz and Jon Satrom from Chicago.

Open to the public, for the benefit of students

“reFrag: glitch addresses the multifold ways in which glitches manifest and are mobilized artistically in our lives,” said Benjamin Gaulon. “Our aim is to blur the lines between audience and participants, allowing people from all over Europe and internationally to meet, work, exchange and build new ideas, works and outputs. This is the first time in Paris that this type of research and practice is being discussed, presented and explored so we hope to create more awareness of .”

Students at Parsons Paris have been exposed to Glitch Art practices during their studies and are currently working on projects that will be added to the exhibition at the school’s gallery during the event. It is also a unique opportunity for students to meet with internationally renowned artists and theorists, in an informal, purposely disorganized and spontaneous manner.

What is Glitch Art?

Glitch Art is the aestheticization of digital or analog errors, such as artifacts and other "bugs", by either corrupting digital code/data or by physically manipulating electronic devices. Glitch tools are developed by artists, coders and hardware hackers, for their own practice and, very often, as freely-shared and open source tools for others to explore the potential of such practices.
