Ronchini Gallery is proud to present Silhouettes its third solo exhibition of works by the American artist Rebecca Ward. Featuring all new works completely made out of silk, for this exhibition Ward continues to investigate the space beyond the canvas, creating works that explore the rich territory between sculpture and painting.
In this new series of silk works, Ward explores variations on the silhouette of a face by layering geometric shapes to create works that appear abstract, but retain elements and qualities of figuratism.
The translucent qualities of the silk not only add to the geometric qualities of the works, but it also reveals the custom frames that were created specifically to work with the images on the surface, all in individualistic ways. Ward’s artworks reveal and obscure, and by their nature, entice viewers to closely investigate contrasts in line and material, modulations in color, and multi-dimensional layers.
By revealing the underlying stretcher bars, Ward highlights the physical structure of the painting itself. Evocative of architecture, her works remind the viewer of the multi-dimensionality and thus multi-sensory nature of art.
