RAFT, Between The Waves, is an online exhibition that brings together the work of twelve artists from the UK, Europe, and the USA, and highlights their unique responses to Géricault’s 1818 masterpiece from a 2020 perspective.
About
Described as depicting “a grisly tale of incompetence and cannibalism", what does ‘The Raft of the Medusa’, a painting created 202 years ago, has to do with our dystopian world of pandemics and global hyper-technology?
Themes from the painting that have resonated particularly with the artists include the culling of the weak and elderly, mistrust and fear of others, a sense of separation and isolation, the fragile and precarious nature of our existence, and the allure of hope on the horizon.
In a time that challenges artists to find new ways to reach out to the world, RAFT, Between the Waves has been created as Androtechne’s first online exhibition - bringing together its international membership to create work in a variety of styles and media including video, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and kinetic sculpture.
Reflecting on these challenges, one of the founders of the Androteche, Brian Dennis felt “lockdown threatened to split up the collective, but virtual meetings actually strengthened the bonds with our international membership.
The great thing about this virtual exhibition is that we have been able to include artists from both Europe and the USA in the show. Creating a virtual exhibition gives you access to artists in a way that wouldn’t be possible in a conventional physical show.”
