About
We are proud to present Alina Negoita’s photographic essay, featured in the Protein Journal #16, entitled Birds in Space. It is an ongoing documentary project started in April 2014, illustrating young female gymnasts. The series draws inspiration from Constantin Brancusi's artistic philosophy and modern sculpture featuring birds, and is associated with the delicacy, grace and perfection of Romanian gymnasts, paying credits to legends such as Nadia Comaneci. With the starting point of this being an homage to Brancusi, the project developed in a thoughtful way, involving elements such as identity, familiar backgrounds, movement and performance. Over a period of more than a year, Negoita was able to document them during training and competitions, showcasing their fragility and strength, I witnessed them growing and our relationship evolving from a distant point of view to getting up close and personal.
You will also get a sneak peek into our latest issue featuring insightful profiles, observations and guides alongside a report tackling preconceptions and changes around the topic of 'age' before it hits the stands.
