What does it mean to discover something, the like of which you have never
known before? Science, research, revelation or exploration in another land?
Travel, the feeling of being an outsider or an exile in your own world?
Disorientation, dislocation, equivocation, I can only describe it now as Bridget
Riley meets Jenga. The rug has been pulled from under your feet to reveal an
abyss of possibility, or else the death of everything that precedes.
Propeller Island is an artist led collaboration based in London. It operates out of a variety of venues as a mobile arena for exhibitions, residencies and events. It takes its name from the novel by Jules Verne, which tells the story of a string quartet that gets lured to perform on a floating utopian island. Taking the structure of the book as the framework, the group intend to present an equal number of projects, each representing one of the 25 chapters of the book. The first chapter, âThe Quartet' took place in an empty retail property in South Kensington, culminating in a four-day live extravaganza, which was generously supported by The Brompton Estate. For âPower of a Discord', the second chapter in the novel, we invited artists to contribute to an evening of film, performance, music and lectures at The Bear in Camberwell. âThe Gossipy Guide', the third chapter, will be launched as a publication at Tenderpixel Gallery in March 2010. The Disconcerted Concert Party is the point in the book at which the protagonists discover that they have been misled onto a new, floating world. Related concerns have informed the artists involved in Propeller Island 4, creating a show that includes performance, video, installation and sculpture.
