DIGITAL BAROQUE Joey Holder's work includes painting, sculpture, video and digital manipulations. She is concerned with the notions of the artificial and the natural, two terms whose meanings we have become less able to define within today's modern technology driven world and our adaption to this ever-revised order. By contrasting organic substances and surfaces through a series of abstractions, she creates a world of manifold layers, none more unified or natural than the next. These hybridities may suggest a particular function or natural form, but remain elusive through their odd displacement. Fragmented patterns clash against automated representations, each vying for the viewer's attention, creating a barrage of excess and exuberance. Virtual and digitised forms exist in parallel, distant remnants forced together into stable configurations, resulting in moments of pure display and hyper-aestheticisation. ABOUT THE ARTIST Joey Holder received her BA in painting from Kingston University and graduated with an MFA form Goldsmiths in 2010. She has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally. Recent shows this year include ‘Westworld' at xero, kline and coma, Diagrammatic Form at Banner Repeater, BYOB at Bargehouse and 'The Supra-Sensorial Bin', VSR, (all in London). In 2009 her work was featured in ‘Impossible Exchange' for Frieze Projects (at Frieze Art Fair) and in the same year she was shortlisted for the Red Mansion Art Prize. Upcoming shows this year include 'Hash fail' at Grand Union, Birmingham, 'Phobia' at Hanmi Gallery, London and 'Xanadu' at Jack Chiles Projects, New York. Joey is part of the art group psychoanalYSL.
