About

Agnès Varda is considered one of the most influential creative personalities of our time - the French photographer, filmmaker and visual artist, who died in 2019, left behind a life's work spanning more than six decades, in which the pioneer of modern film reinvented herself again and again. Her last creative period - her "third life as a young artist", as she herself called it - has so far been far less well known and explored than the numerous films she directed before.

On 9 June, the most comprehensive solo exhibition to date on this third and last creative period opens at silent green. Two installations in the outdoor area can already be seen from 6.5: As a world premiere, a "cinema tent" made of 35 mm film strips from Varda's film Sans toit ni loi/Vagabond, a refuge in the style of this very film, will be set up and exhibited. Like Varda's film huts, the tent offers a cinematic retreat for fantasising and dreaming. The second work, Le Tombeau de Zgougou dans sa cabane/The Tomb of Zgougou in Her Cabin, is a video installation in a cabin built from recycled materials that takes visitors to the grave of Vardas' beloved cat on the island of Noirmoutier.

Pre-opening outdoor area: 6.5., 6 p.m.
Main exhibition Betonhalle: 10.6.-20.7. I Opening 9.6. 6 p.m.
Hommage aux Justes de France Kuppelhalle: 10.-20.7.

An accompanying film series at the Arsenal cinema will show selected films by Varda from 11.6 onwards, which take up the motifs of the exhibition. The programme will also be supplemented by talks and workshops.

From 10 July, Varda's installation work Hommage aux Justes de France will also be on show in the Kuppelhalle, a work in memory of the "Righteous", those often forgotten who saved the lives of Jews during the German occupation of France and risked their own lives in the process.
