PORTRAITS explores this traditional genre in the contemporary art world. Today, artists explore portraiture not only because of the challenges inherent in painting a person's likeness, but also the need of capturing their personality and spirit.

Presenting artworks from Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK, the artists share with us with an international overview, the pleasure and endless possibilities available in the pursuit of painting the human figure and its enigmatic psyche. The works selected, encourage and require the development of personal relationships, not only do they offer a deeper understanding of the artists and their sitters, but they also demand auto reflection and exploration into ones self. While some artworks offer an exact depiction of the sitter and allow us to get involved, others deny access to true likeness and specific figures in order to focus on various issues, such as identity, social inequities, politics, and the genre of portraiture itself. The diversity of expression is also reflected in the medium, from mixed media and photography to paint and drawing we explore portraiture in today’s art scene.

You are warmly welcome to join us for a drink with the artists at the opening night of PORTRAITS at The Brick Lane Gallery open from 6pm-8.30pm on Wednesday 2nd September 2015.
