Mosaics by THE HACKEY MOSAIC PROJECT

About

This exhibition showcases works by the artists who have trained at the Hackney Mosaic project. The Project has been running for over four years and has attracted a core group of participants who have learned high levels of skill and technique. They have also developed very individual styles and this group show provides an opportunity to appreciate the richness and variety of the work produced.

The Mosaic Project was set up to help people recovering from addiction and mental health problems. The manual activity is therapeutic and calming, and the group activity provides a focus for a friendly and relaxed social group, helping people to re-establish social bonds and strengthening their recovery. Local people have also become involved and it has provided a valuable activity for those who, for many reasons such as ill health or retirement, find they have time on their hands. Having learned the basic techniques they have responded with a remarkable outpouring of imaginative and creative work.

The primary focus of the Hackney Mosaic Project has been to make large scale mosaics for public spaces around the borough. These pieces are designed by mosaicist Tessa Hunkin and made as a group endeavour by the participants. Over 200 people have been involved in the Project so far. Our work can be seen at the following places;

Shepherdess Walk Park

Sainsbury’s, Old Street

Hackney Downs Children’s Playground

West Hackney Recreation Ground (behind St Paul’s Stoke Newington)

We are currently busy working on a commission from ZSL for the new lion enclosure at London Zoo and we welcome new commissions and opportunities.
