Over the past 15 years, Sheffield-based artist Paul Morrison has established a global audience for his bold and intriguing images. Having shown in solo exhibitions in major cities from Tokyo to New York, Morrison will debut a series of new work as part of his first large-scale exhibition in his home town of Sheffield this summer.
Morrison's striking, often black and white, work finds its inspiration in the historic and contemporary, from engravings and botanical illustrations to comics and animation. Found images are then seamlessly woven together using digital software and often re-created on an epic scale, on walls or buildings. The resulting pictures may look comfortably familiar at first a plant strewn landscape perhaps, or a forested glade but look closer and oddities or contradictions soon surface. Above all, these are illustrations to a story which is yet to be written one which the viewer is invited to create themselves.
This new show at the Millennium Gallery will feature paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and film from the last three years. Featuring a host of new works created specifically for this exhibition, including a vast new wall painting, this will be one of Morrison's most wide-ranging exhibitions to date and marks a significant homecoming event for the artist.

Born in Liverpool in 1966, Paul Morrison studied at Sheffield City Polytechnic and Goldsmiths College of Art. Recent solo shows include Alison Jacques Gallery, London (2011); Fondazione Volume, Rome (2011); Cheim & Read, New York (2009); Tanja Pol Galerie, Munich (2009); Las Vegas Art Museum, Las Vegas (2008); Bloomberg SPACE, London (2007). Morrison's work is represented in a number of major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; V&A, London; and the British Council. He has also worked on several commissions including a projects with Comme des Garcons and Liberty.
Paul Morrison: Auctorum will open at Museums Sheffield: Millennium Gallery on 7 June and continue until 4 November 2012. Entry to the exhibition is FREE.
