About

Pants on Fire is an exhibition by sisters Lorna and Catriona Robertson who use humour and playful deception to produce work exploring how the everyday can be understood and perceived. Before reaching an exhibition space many of the works begin as performance interventions within day to day London environments, in places such as buses, supermarkets and libraries, while others begin as sculptures and develop into performances. By subtlety manipulating and fabricating objects, the work playfully exists within the cracks of familiar scenarios, these small interruptions draw out enquiries as to how we understand everyday social systems. Many of the works operate as dysfunctional actions, hinting at logic through unconventional approaches which have found ways to function and exist within pre-existing networks. The actions carried out by the artists test the boundaries of how we conduct ourselves in public places and how we automatically react to certain situations. The work invites the viewer to discover and understand both the initial and hidden intentions, with the possibility of questioning their own assumptions and the extent of their curiosity. In order for this to occur, the artists leave subtle hints for the viewer to piece together themselves, or they directly describe the performance or intervention that took place. The works presented in Pants on Fire are the documentations of these performances as prints, sculptures, installation, interactive participation and live performance. Pants on Fire explores methods of fabrication, deception and the realisation of that deception. The evening examines what is produced through the act of recollection by using different methods of storytelling to explore ways of sharing and communicating after an event has passed.
