Outwith is a collaboration between Sally Underwood and Roxy Walsh, between sculpture and painting.
Dwellings or small architectures are central to Sally Underwood and Roxy Walsh’s work: sculptures sitting in a painted scape, with paintings housed inside. At Art Exchange, ‘shelter’ or location is provided by seating around a tree; you are invited to sit – informally, as on a stoop – and watch the work, not needing to move too far or too fast. You can stay without browsing, think without being asked to buy or eat anything.
Each work makes space to look at another and you are invited to look outwards and inwards. To think of Mr and Mrs Andrews in the Gainsborough painting surveying their estate, or of taking a cup of tea to the window on a bright day to let the sight of the world going by allow space to reflect and to think.
Sally Underwood lives and works in Berlin, while Roxy Walsh is based in London. They started working together after meeting on residency at Braziers International Art Workshop in 2006. Both have exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally.
