About

The Moabit art festival Ortstermin 20, exploring the theme bis hierher und nicht weiter . this far and no further, is launching on August 28 at 6pm in the courtyard of the Berlin-Kolleg behind Galerie Nord.

Despite all the uncertainty, nearly 200 artists and creatives answered Kunstverein Tiergarten’s call to participate. They are opening studios, workshops, and private apartments, presenting curated exhibitions and music performances, and invite you to attend events and discussions whose scope reaches far beyond the festival topic. We are grateful to them all for contributing to Ortstermin in these difficult times, and for allowing the festival’s multi-faceted programme to unfold in 2020 as well. The abundance of artistic and cultural contributions encourages – in keeping with the highly topical festival theme – a wideranging, critical examination of current social, political, cultural and ecological developments.

bis hierher und nicht weiter . this far and no further is an appeal to rethink, but also a warning not to overstep certain lines that endanger societal peace, ecological balance, and peaceful, tolerant coexistence.

COVID-19 and the resulting restriction of encounters and fundamental rights, culture and the quality of life, have expanded the subject matter to include existential questions. The temporary forced suspension of usual models of consumption and productivity has amplified awareness of social injustice and the dependence on capitalist production chains. During this time of uncertainty, insurgency, and new alliances, the potential of creative unrest is more relevant than ever. How do artists encounter and engage with individual and societal restrictions? How do they respond to scaremongering and trivialisation, racist and nationalist exclusionary rhetoric, all of which were already on the rise in the mood of general uncertainty before Corona?

In the Galerie Nord, the artists of the curated exhibition bis hierher und nicht weiter this . far and no further have already opened a thematic space for the festival since July. Their contributions explore boundaries in physical, social, and political settings, in order to reveal and deconstruct the complexity and interconnectedness of socio-politically relevant processes and their resulting ambivalences.

For 16 years now, the Kunstverein Tiergarten e.V. has been organising the popular art festival Ortstermin in Moabit and the Hansaviertel. This year Ortstermin is taking place at the same time as the beginning of the Art Week of the communal galleries from August 28-30.
