Exploring sea-related themes, including monster myths, local fishing communities, Hull's role as a maritime city and the implications of climate change, Offshore includes ambitious new art commissions that relate to the museums' collections.

About

Alice Sharp, Curator and Director of Invisible Dust, says: "Since 2009, Invisible Dust has been working with leading artists and scientists to stimulate new scientific ideas and to produce exciting works of contemporary art. We are delighted that that this major new exhibition puts Hull at centre stage in a unique collaboration between the Ferens Art Gallery and Hull Maritime Museum." 

Offshore is part of season two of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, Roots and Routes, which also includesSomewhere Becoming Sea at Humber Street Gallery. That exhibition features recently produced work by artists from the North Sea region, which has been curated by Steven Bode and supported by Film and Video Umbrella and runs from 5 April – 17 June 2017. 

‘Offshore: artists explore the sea’ is produced by Invisible Dust in partnership with Hull Culture and Leisure (HCAL) and Hull City Council and Hull City Council and is supported by Arts Council England, HCAL and Wellcome Trust Sustaining Excellence Award, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK) and University of Hull. 

With artists: John Akomfrah, Jonathan Baldock and Ian J Brown, Badgers of Bohemia, Adam Chodzko, Phil Coy, Tacita Dean, Alexander Duncan, Tania Kovats, Lawrence Lek, David Malone, China Miéville, Kasia Molga, Mariele Neudecker, Saskia Olde Wolbers, Martin Parr, Emily Richardson, Shimabuku, Zineb Sedira, John Smith, Bik Van der Pol, John Wedgwood Clarke and Rob Mackay.
