More than an exhibition, Nippon América 日本アメリカ is a social experiment that relies on Japan as a case study to explore a way to break the barriers imposed by prejudice and othering.

About

The Nippon América 日本アメリカ photo exhibition will open at Mexico City's Museo Nacional de las Culturas del Mundo on April 27, 2022.

Nippon América 日本アメリカ takes a look at Japan through the eyes of three Latin American Nikkei photographers: the Brazilian Marcio Takeda, the Peruvian Luis Okamoto and the Mexican Taeko Nomiya and is curated by the Mexican artist Alantl Molina, as a personal homage to Japan.

Marcio Takeda does colorful digital street photography that show us the surprises Marcio runs into when he hits the streets with his camera. Luis Okamoto does Polaroids that focus exclusively in architectural details of ancient temples or archaeological sites. In his pictures, ancient Peru and modern Japan would seem like two faces of the same country. The Mexican Taeko Nomiya often uses double exposure to combine a shot from Japan with a shot from Mexico in order to show what the world looks like to people who grew up in between two cultures.

The pictures were shot in Tokyo in August 2019 when the photographers traveled to the city to explore how the romanticized Japan of their family histories would compare with what they would find during their visit, and the exhibition debuted in Japan in September. The second edition took place in Colombia during the International Barranquilla Arts Carnival on February 2020.
