Nina Canell’s artistic practice deals with process, transformation and material agency. It does not revolve around the finished artwork, instead foregrounding synergy, entanglement and unpredictability.
About
Nina Canell engages a multiplicity of materialities including electricity, mastic gum, oxygen, water, subsea cables and shoe laces. Her work is recognised for its experimental nature and its questioning of matter as inert, dead or instrumentalised. It is the overlapping trajectories of energetics, material vitalities and spatio-durational convergences that bring the work into existence.
For the Berlinische Galerie, the artist will conceive of a site-specific installation and an artist’s book together with Robin Watkins.
Nina Canell was born in Växjö, Sweden, in 1979 and now lives and works in Berlin. She studied at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dublin, Ireland. Canell’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions, including S.M.A.K, Gent; Staatliche Kunsthalle, Baden-Baden; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin and Fridericianum, Kassel, and also at biennials in Venice, Sydney, Lyon, Gwangiu and Liverpool.
