About

MMAT -  Mauro Mattei Art Trust is pleased to present “Nicole Colombo, Shifting balance”, an exhibition of new works by Nicole Colombo conceived as a dialogue between the artist and recent sculpture acquisitions of Mauro Mattei Collection. The show, curated by Marta Orsola Sironi, will be held at 9 French Place in Shoreditch on Saturday, December 10th and Sunday, December 11th only, from 11 am to 9 pm.

On Saturday, December 10th from 6 pm to 9 pm MMAT is pleased to invite you for a drinks reception and guided tours with the artist and the curator. Moreover, on Sunday, December 11th MMAT will be hosting breakfast and curator-led tours from 10.30 am to 1 pm and the closing drinks from 5 pm to 8 pm.
The exhibition is the end of Nicole Colombo’s residency at Kupfer London and part of the program as the winner of the 2022 MMAT Acquisition Prize.

“Shifting Balance” is Nicole Colombo’s attempt to dismantle any idea of dichotomy that is established in our relationship with the world, inviting the viewers to question themself and embrace the duality of existence. In the border zone between discomfort and comfort, between power dynamics and the power of fragility, between love and lust, pain and vulnerability, libido and repulsion, and body and narrative, the artist opens up spaces of freedom and resistance. In the precarious harmony of a shifting balance, she creates a dialogue with selected works from the MMAT collection, enhancing the beauty of cacophony in the chorus of different voices and approaches.

Nicole Colombo: Born in 1991, Nicole Colombo is emerging as one of the most interesting sculptors of her generation in the Italian context. She lives and works in Milan. Her domestic and large-scale sculptures and installations create tension in the space and in the observer’s mind as they possess a  sort of living energy,  while the chosen materials and their combination are libidinal and repulsive. An anthropological approach is at the heart of Colombo’s research: the artist explores the dichotomies that often characterize Western societies and the difficulty for human beings to accept their coexistence. By appealing to our shared imagination, the artist gives the viewer works that represent the duality of things, creating abstract characters that portray each of us.

MMAT Mauro Mattei Art Trust: MMAT is a not-for-profit organisation with an active philanthropic role, consistent with its founder Mauro Mattei’s constant engagement in supporting contemporary art. MMAT is focused on artists born in the 80s and the 90s: MMAT wants to foster collaboration and dialogue among all the players actively supporting art and artists (museums, foundations, collections and other art trusts). MMAT Acquisition Prize: The Acquisition Prize is conceived as an itinerant award aimed at supporting emerging art in all its forms. The main purpose of the Prize is to allow young artists and their projects to grow with a view to discovering, valorising and highlighting the best of the new trends of international contemporary art.  Following the previous editions of the prize, the fourth episode it has been conceived as a residency held in collaboration with Kupfer Project, from November 14th to December 11th.
