Chris Beetles Gallery is delighted to present Breaking Ice. Nicholas Romeril’s latest selling exhibition of oils on canvas and works on paper celebrates his recent expedition to Antarctica aboard HMS Protector as Artist-in-Residence for the Friends of the Scott Polar Institute.

About

A native of the Channel Islands, Nicholas Romeril captures the essence of what is central to so many islanders’ lives. His striking motifs of boulders, sand dunes and foaming seas create beautiful and dramatic visions of pristine coastlines. In 2018, Nicholas travelled to Antarctica as artist-in-residence for the Friends of the Scott Polar Research Institute, an experience that enabled him to focus on the stark, haunting beauty of the polar landscape.

In January 2018, Nicholas travelled to Antarctica aboard HMS Protector, as artist-in-residence for the Friends of the Scott Polar Institute. During the six-week expedition, he travelled to 15 special interest sites, covering over 3,500 miles. He produced over 200 drawings and paintings, a diary of the journey and a number of virtual reality films. A small number of these works went on display at Bonhams, London, in summer 2018 as part of ‘Polar Encounters’, an exhibition by the Friends of the Scott Polar Research Institute displaying 200 years of contemporary and historical Polar Art.

In April 2019, over 70 paintings inspired by Nicholas Romeril’s expedition will be on display for the first time as ‘Breaking Ice’, the latest solo exhibition of his work at Chris Beetles Gallery, for which this is the accompanying catalogue.
