Artist Lee Madgwick has built up a considerable following for his quirky interpretations of urban and rural Britain, in particular scenes of East Anglia. Returning to Cambridge for his second solo show at Byard Art, Lee has expanded his repertoire to include haunting images of grand desolate houses, abandoned vehicles, summer meadows and graffiti laden streets. A common thread in Lee's work is the way he imbues his paintings with a mysterious emotive quality, often suggesting a scene frozen ‘mid act' that leaves you, the viewer, curious about what might happen next. In most of my work I hope to achieve a looming presence" explains Lee "With an element of mystery and suspense (and a hint of foreboding) the stillness of the 'scene' consequently brings an emotive feeling to the fore."
