About

DALIE GALERIE is pleased to present our forthcoming exhibition titled “NEW SURREALISM”, a group exhibition featuring the incredible works of four visual artists, from various locations around the world. The exhibition is curated by Adila Ben and Rodshir Daile, and features a total of 14 works, by artists Nekissa Behroozfard, Gaia Adducchio, Sam Heydt, and René Agostinho.  “NEW SURREALISM” will run in our online virtual exhibition space from January 7 - April 7, 2021. The purpose of this exhibition is to highlight surrealist artists in the modern age.

From the beginning of its introduction, the surrealism movement has been known for its visual artworks and the juxtaposition of uncommon imagery. People often look at surrealism as a thing of the past, more so because of how surrealism aesthetics are applied to digital mediums and away from the traditional canvas. Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes, sometimes with photographic precision, creating strange creatures from everyday objects, and developing painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself.

Each exhibiting artist brings their own uniqueness to the genre of surrealism. Their mediums include paintings on canvases and mixed-media collages. We wanted a diverse group of artists, being from all over the world, to bring their different perspectives on surrealism.

Nekissa Behroozfard is a Hamburg based artist and has a style similar to that of René Magritte. Her piece “The Way” in some way, pays homage to Magritte’s “Time Transfixed”.

Gaia Adducchio work features a unique aesthetic, by adopting typical techniques of abstract painting to instant photography (specifically a re-elaboration of grattage skills by scrapping emulsion on polaroid support. She’s mastered camera-less photography with the use of expired polaroid film. Each image is the result of a scanned, digitally post-produced polaroid frame and is printed just as one single, non-reproducible piece. Her project titled “Étoiles” debuted during Prague Photo 2018 and attended the eighth edition of Cascina Farsetti Art, at Palazzo Velli Expo. In February 2019, “Étoiles” was shown at the Grand Palais in Paris during the Salon Comparisons exhibition.

Sam Heydt is from New York City, a visual artist working across different media; including film, video, installation, photography, sculpture, sound, and text. Heydt presents an abstract proposition for a world on the periphery of history, one that not only appears haunted by the ghosts of the past but built on it. Heydt’s layered imagery conflates time and place, colliding, and merging generations of possibilities and disrupting logical relationships between occurrences.

René Agostinho is a Brazilian Artist, his main influences are Van Gogh, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, and Frida Kahlo. The landscapes in his works are somewhat familiar yet mysterious. His painting “Yellow Brick Road” is a perfect example of the merger between known and unknown landscapes.

Collectively, the works within this exhibition breathe new life into surrealism and give a new perspective and advancements in the modern age.

DAILE GALERIE will be releasing a printed exhibition catalog for New Surrealism, towards the final month of the exhibition. Any press request, questions, and pricing information can be directed to info@dailegalerie.com.
