Discussion: Neighbourhoods and Neighbourliness

About

The practice of artists and curators working directly within specific communities and neighbourhoods under a socially engaged framework has escalated in recent years. What are the ethics of such practices? Neighbourhoods and Neighbourliness is a discussion created by writer and artist Sonya Dyer in partnership with a-n and Axis, Dyer has drawn upon her knowledge, experience and interests to create this programme. An artist and curator discuss their working relationship. And to explore the implications or issues arising from their practice that will form an online ‘collection' available as a resource for all. The discussion is led by artist Ana Laura López and curator Sophie Hope who have both worked extensively in collaborating with communities to devise artistic projects with unexpected outcomes. This discussion offers a platform for critical discussion on the role of artists and curators within their community specifically in the context of Margate. If you are an artist, creative practitioner, an active member of the community, work closely with local people or student, please come along and join our discussion. To make a booking, please email info@turnercontemporary.org or telephone 01843 294208, ext 4. Biographies Ana Laura López de la Torre is an artist and writer based in London. Using the overlooked and the underrated as a starting point, her work creates visible and unexpected connections between things, people and places. Sophie Hope's work inspects the uncertain relationships between art and society. This involves establishing how to declare her politics through her practice, rethinking what it means to be paid to be critical and devising tactics to challenge notions of authorship. She is currently completing her PhD: ‘Participating in the Wrong Way? Practice Based Research into Cultural Democracy and the Commissioning of Art to Effect Change' at Birkbeck, University of London where she works as a lecturer. Sepake Angiama's interest lies in discursive practices and the social framework, which has led her to work with artists who disrupt or provoke aspects of the social sphere through action, design, dance and architecture. From 2004-7 she was Public Programmes Coordinator at Hayward Gallery, in 2008, she received the Monique Beudert Award. She is currently the Curator of Public Programmes at Turner Contemporary, Margate.
