Muses, Maps and Myths is a solo show by Mychael Barratt, a popular and captivating artist whose irreverent sense of humour runs through all of his prints and paintings.

About

Muses, Maps and Myths is an exhibition of work by highly acclaimed artist Mychael Barratt; an artist with an unusual – and unusually entertaining - focus.

In the ‘Artists’ Cats and Dogs’ series Mychael Barratt takes famous paintings, the sort that every schoolchild knows, and he adds a cat or dog.  That makes his approach sound simple, which is far from true. For each artwork, Barratt carefully devises a way to incorporate a feline or canine feel while keeping the artwork fully in the spirit and style of its original artist. Dali, for instance, sees his melted clocks transformed into leggy, slumbering dogs, while Yves Klein’s perfections are disrupted by ghostly blue feline footprints.  Clever, funny, iconic, yet not without deeper meaning, Barratt’s paintings are marvellously entertaining.

The exhibition will include a collection of paintings and prints from his new publication ‘The Master’s Muse – Artists’ Cats And Dogs’, a painting of the Mile End Mural commissioned during the Olympics 2012, all three of Mychael’s big maps and an array of various London based paintings and prints, including his ‘Urban Myths’ series and a new piece inspired by Ealing.

“Our upcoming exhibition at For Arts Sake is a solo show by one of our most popular and captivating artists” says Brian Davis, owner of For Arts Sake. “There are so many threads and layers in Mychael’s work; people respond emotionally to their visual appeal but also intellectually, enjoying finding hidden clues and references within the work or to the humorous touches, with even David Hockney purportedly having ‘slightly chuckled’ (!) when he saw Mychael’s etching ‘Hockney’s Dog’.

Mychael illustrates incidents from everyday life, folk tales and Shakespeare along with his series on artist’s cats and dogs, and his irreverent sense of humour runs through all of his prints and paintings.

The exhibition opens on Friday 11th September and is on view until Sunday 11th October 2015. Those wishing to attend the private viewing and meet the artist on Thursday 10th September 6pm to 9pm should email info@forartssake.com. Muses, Maps and Myths will feature over 50 works. The exhibition is free to enter with all works available for sale.

There will be a competition running throughout the duration of the exhibition of For Arts Sake Facebook page, giving people a chance to win Mychael’s print, ‘Bridget Riley’s Dog’.
