Procreate Project is proud to present a group exhibition featuring twenty short-listed artists of the Mother Art Prize 2018, the only international prize for self-identifying women and non-binary visual artists with caring responsibilities. The exhibition at Mimosa House, London will be curated by independent curator Marcelle Joseph, Zabludowicz Collection director Elizabeth Neilson, and Whitechapel Gallery curator Laura Smith.

Featuring artists that work across a range of media, the works were selected among 290 entries judged by Beth Colocci, Trustee of the UK Friends of the National Museum for Women in the Arts; Sylvie Gormezano, Director of Picture This Productions and Chair of the Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD); Marcelle Joseph, Director and Curator of Marcelle Joseph Projects; Sigrid Kirk, Co-founder of ARTimbarc and AWITA (Association of Women in the Arts); Elizabeth Neilson, Director of the Zabludowicz Collection; and Laura Smith, Curator at the Whitechapel Gallery.

“These twenty artists who are also mothers prove that nothing is taboo, and a mother’s lived experience is as worthy a subject as any other for representation in the art world.” Marcelle Joseph

The Mother Art Prize was established by Procreate Project with the collaboration of Create London and the White House Dagenham. Its aim is to promote and support women artists who are mothers as well as drive the attention of the wider public to a broad-spectrum of themes that would otherwise be overlooked and devalued.
The winning artist is awarded a cash prize, mentoring and a month residency at the White House Dagenham.

The winner of the Mother Art Prize 2018, announced in December 2018, is British multi-disciplinary artist Candida Powell-Williams. Powell-Williams creates a complex web of references as she brings together history and symbolism in her work, disorientating the viewer with the familiar and the unfamiliar.

“Being both an artist and a parent is physically and emotionally demanding, lonely, financially crippling and most of the networking opportunities happen at bath time which is one of the most important times of day for parents regardless of access to childcare. The Mother Art Prize is a wonderful idea for recognising the achievements of artist-mothers. Putting those achievements together as an exhibition encourages a sense of community and support, giving space to consider the balance between the demands of parenting and artistic ambitions.” - Candida Powell-Williams

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication, with an introduction by the exhibition curators.
