About
In Spite of the Mass is an ongoing project by Milou van der Maaden, the current Adrian Carruthers Studio Award artist, dealing with immigration politics and national image-making in the Netherlands. The exhibition will present fragments of Milou’s new project, and its surrounding research, through a focus on biopolitical struggles and the agency of resistance.
Working across video, photographic, socio-performative and text works, Milou will utilise the Acme Project Space as a place to instigate conversations between research and practice, exploring agency and resistance through visual embodiment and performativity.
Established in 2002 for artists graduating from The Slade School of Art, the Adrian Carruthers Studio Award is part of Acme Studios' Residency & Awards Programme and provides a free studio for a year, plus a bursary of £6,000. The award was created in memory of the artist Adrian Carruthers, who died in October 2001 at the age of 40
