About

Michele Horrigan Nature Obscured by Factory / Factory Obscured by Fog | PRESS RELEASE 12 November — 28 November PRIVATE VIEW 12 November 6.30 — 8.30 Before representing Ireland at the Shanghai Expo 2010 Michele Horrigan takes over artist-led space Heaven's Full with an installation highlighting the struggle between nature and industry, and between environment and economy. This will be Horrigans first time exhibiting in London. Nature Obscured by Factory / Factory Obscured by Fog, is an ongoing project which represents and reports the environmental impacts of Aughinish Alumina, an industrial complex operational on the Shannon River Estuary, Limerick, Ireland since 1983. It is the largest factory of its kind in Europe, importing bauxite ore from Jamaica and Guinea to create aluminium, a metal used in many aspects of contemporary life. Photographs, videos and found objects are used to narrate a debate surrounding alleged environmental irregularities attributed to the factories activities contrasted with the industry's self promotion and environmental concern. This exhibition is prat funded by Culture Ireland Michele Horrigan (b. Limerick, lives and works in Limerick and Berlin) was educated at the University of Ulster, Belfast and the Stadelschule, Frankfurt. Recent solo exhibitions have been at Frankfurter Kunstverein (2009) and Galway Arts Centre (2009). Upcoming exhibitions include Irish Pavillion, Shanghai Expo (2010) and Showcase, Gallery of Photography, Dublin (2010). Since 2006 she has been Founder / Curatorial Director of Askeaton Contemporary Arts (Limerick).
