Membranes Out Of Order by and with Margherita Pevere, Theresa Schubert, and Karolina Żyniewicz – Finissage

About

Membranes Out Of Order responds to the current ethical and cultural challenges posed by the interplay of biotechnology and ecology. The artistic positions of Margherita Pevere, Theresa Schubert and Karolina Żyniewicz offer an interface between one's own body, everyday experience and controversial topics such as contraception and meat consumption or right to suicide.

Skin, cellular membranes, microbial cellulose, parafilm. "Membrane" acts as a material and as metaphor: a layer that enables a separation while allowing exchange. Membranes may be translucent and flexible, but can also get broken and need stitching. Biological membranes return in various of the featured artworks together with technical membranes like parafilm expanding on encounters that membranes offer while also resisting binary distinctions.

The exhibition creates an transdisciplinary field between art and scientific research. At a time when the pandemic has confronted society with literacy previously reserved for experts, their three positions anchor art as a cognitive attitude, a performative act or as a link to nature in a consistent examination of the interface between one's own body and everyday experience.

With the disclosure of the artists' work processes, the directions of the exhibition fan out, like a cross-section through the structure of a membrane. The six rooms of the show shape a narrative that will bring the audience through vulnerabilityobsessionsmonumentality, and microscopic world(s) with incursions in video pieces, sculpture, photography, laboratory journals and drawing.
