About
Anteros is welcoming Kirstin Bicker, Kristy Campbell and Emma Cracknell to the main gallery for the exhibition "Maxim of Manner" curated by Judith Stewart. Within this exhibition the artists explore language and the way it can be taken for granted. Indeed, the Maxim of Manner acknowledges the attempt to be as clear, brief and orderly as possible. However, the three artists here are aware that language not only operates in ways that rely on factors beyond language, but that the scope for ambiguities, misunderstandings and mistranslations are inherent characteristics. We speak but may not be heard; we may be silenced because the factors embedded in language (how one speaks, who has the right to speak) interfere with these attempts to communicate. In these cases we are left with the things that fall between – or outside of – language.
