Matthew Dibble’s large-scale abstract work has clearly evolved and intensified during his three decades of painting, but certain elements remain the same.

About

According to arts writer Katherine Aimone, the “energy on his canvases is scrappy, adventurous, unapologetic, and direct.”

In Useful Pressures, he explores unresolved contests that bubble just beneath the surface; the ones that linger and give rise to the odd feeling of being a stranger to oneself. While clear prose propels the narrative of everyday life, the transformative nature of abstract painting dictates a less ordinary approach in which the artist strives to carry a suggestion of the infinite while being fully aware of his humanity.

Dibble sees an unbridled force at play in the world, far beneath the common reality, eternally restructuring itself in new and dynamic ways. Works in this show are his latest attempt at giving form to this subterranean consciousness.

Useful Pressures is Matthew Dibble’s first solo exhibition at First Street Gallery.
