M Fine Arts Galerie is pleased to announce a solo show by American artist, Mark Knoezer. The unusual, glossy, and glass-like geometric pieces represent Knoerzer’s visual language.

About

Inspired by the group show Big Future, a show that presented miniature work, Knoezer set out to recreate larger scale pieces. Half-Life is the complete vision of that small idea but includes larger scale versions of the original work exhibited in the last show. It took the artist over two years to produce his latest show. This exhibition is the cumulative result of all the mediums and techniques he has learned throughout the first half of his life.

Mark Knoerzer is best known for his abstract paintings and light installations as a formal minimalist. Using color and extensive layering to create geometric images and emergent symbols, Knoerzer has developed a unique visual language. While often highly formal and even symmetrical, his work reflects an intense commitment to beauty and the sheer pleasure of seeing.

To create a balance between simplicity and complexity, he chooses simple shapes, such as a square or a circle, then adorns it with intricate concentric hand-painted layers. Specifically, Knoerzer’s work is brought to fruition through an extensive and meticulous layering process. He first hand draws his designs, then outlines the shapes with acrylics and fills them in with oils – sometimes he uses up to 15 layers of paint depending on the intended effect. Afterward, Knoerzer coats his paintings with 3 layers of epoxy to achieve the high-gloss finish. The process of creating these works also generates a constant flow of new ideas that continually fill his sketchbook.

The artist’s unique technique is the result of his experimentation with various mediums from an early age and his experience with 3D light installations. Knoerzer was interested in art since childhood and his parents supported his talents by enrolling him in several art classes. Growing up in Hudson Valley, New York, he developed a deep appreciation for nature which is revealed in his floral patterns and use of wood. Learning to use various mediums, including ceramics, oil paints, and carpentry, Knoerzer knew he wanted to pursue a career in the arts.
